Taking some time off

There are big behind-the-scenes dramas going on at the moment so I am taking some time off.

In the 1st week of January there should be a special extended edition released featuring my 10 favourite videos that I've discovered in 2009.

Hope to see you then.

WMVP037 - My Friend Ship by Roche Limit

Artist: Roche Limit
Track: My Friend Ship
Director: Dave Righton

Another video that shows the fundamental purpose of WMVP this week. It was made my the artist himself for no money.

Dave Righton AKA Roche Limit initially only used the free Google program Sketch Up to storyboard a video for his track My Friend Ship, but In the end decided the animatic was so good that he already had a perfect video.

He was right and this strange hybrid 2D/3D animation is a great visual experience that works perfectly with the song.

Thanks are due once again to $99 Music Videos, where I first saw this video.

WMVP036 - Cool In The Cool Way by My First Earthquake

Artist: My First Earthquake
Track: Cool In The Cool Way
Director: Katie Gillum

This week we have a video that is almost a short film. To the extent that it has a subtitle 'Invasion of the Hipster Bodysnatchers'.

San Francisco band My First Earthquake have written a song that deals with the 'hipster' scene and how non-inclusive it is. So director Katie Gillum has provided a video that tells the same tale in a visual way. A very cool video that fits the song perfectly.

WMVP035 - Tricycle Days by Mint

Artist: Mint
Track: Tricycle Days
Director: Robert Hackett

This week's video for London electronica artist Mint asks the question, 'What's the most fun thing to do in a swimming pool?'

Director Robert Hackett answers it by having various people including people in evening dress and clowns simply swimming in front of an underwater camera.

A very simple, mellow video for a very simple, mellow song.

WMVP034 - Dear Dictator by Saint Motel

Artist: Saint Motel
Track: Dear Dictator
Director: Carlos Lopez Estrada

After a week off due to hosting issues WMVP is back and better than ever.

This weeks video features Los Angeles band Saint Motel tell the story of a dictator through his rise and fall. Often song titles are metaphorical, but in this case it's actually about a dictator.

In the video directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada we see a single small set that is constantly redecorated to tell the story. It's kind of a mixture of video and making-of. The set is redressed by the extras, and here's another interesting factor. They are girls wearing underwear, boots and military helmets. Not as sleazy as it sounds and fits nicely with the tone of the video. A really nice piece of work.

WMVP033 - Silence by Takka Takka

Artist: Takka Takka
Track: Silence
Director: Amy Finkel (Sailor Beware)

Another stop-motion animated effort this week. Director Amy Finkel has created a huge battle between toy soldiers and monsters. So far so normal. The interesting bit is that the battle is fought over the naked bodies of the band.

Another video that makes you look at the ordinary in a very new way.

WMVP032 - White Piano by Dutchess

Artist: Dutchess
Track: White Piano
Director: Timothy McConville

I've got myself some shiny new editing software this week so hopefully the files will be smoother from now on.

This week we have a stop-motion animated video from a band who's drummer happens to be a director. That's handy.

Timothy McConville of New York band Dutchess provides an interesting video that has a street level view of New York. A great idea that makes you think about your surroundings in a different way.

Independently of this show the video was also featured on the excellent $99 Dollar Music Videos and there is also an interview with McConville.

WMVP031 - Mr Wobble's Nightmare by Kid606

Artist: Kid606
Track: Mr Wobble's Nightmare
Director: Joel Trussell

A strange, twisted animated video this week for a song that is basically a parody.

Berlin based Kid606 has made a track that is a parody of the 4hero track Mr Kirk's Nightmare. Even though it is fundamentally a parody, it's a great track in its own right.

For the video, director Joel Trussell has basically created a fruit slasher film. After hanging fruit from fishing line he and his team animated faces on the fruit and tell the story of Mr Wobble taking bloody (or should that be juicy?) vengeance on the people who have eaten his son. It's a funny, bizarre video from a director who is going places. He recently also directed the video for Love Long Distance by The Gossip.

WMVP030 - Slow Burning Crimes by East Hundred

Artist: East Hundred
Track: Slow Burning Crimes
Director: Macon Blair

This week's video takes a simple, strange idea and makes a simple strange video.

I'm sure many of us made pillow forts when we were younger. I doubt that most of us have made one over the age of about 10. Philadelphia band East Hundred have.

In this video directed by Macon Blair the band are all liing Monkees style in the same house and one morning decide to make a pillow fort and hold a gig there. It's a slightly crazy idea that creates a sweet video for a nice mellow song.

WMVP029 - Your Question Is Important by The Haiku

Artist: The Haiku
Track: Your Question Is Important
Director: Phil Cooper

A triumphant return for Weekly Music Video Podcast with a new location and a new release day. From now on these shows will be released on Fridays rather than Wednesdays.

It's appropriate that the first show of the new era mirrors the first show that I ever did. Episode 1 was a video by Trowbridge band The Haiku and they still provide the theme music for the show.

For the new beginning of the show here is a video from the bands latest EP 'Not Quite The Same'. It's a very angry montage video compiled by the band's singer, that takes the form of a PowerPoint presentation and rails against the corporate world who treats their employees like crap. It's also a very powerful support for the trade union system.

A video that works on many levels and has been very well put together.

On a subject not directly related to the video, Phil Cooper from the band has just completed a new EP in aid of charity. It's called The 9 Album and on 9th September (i.e. 09/09/09) he recorded and produced a 9 track album between 9am and 9pm. The album is available on a donation basis from the website and all proceeds will go to charities that support the emergency services.
